Future Directions

The Multi Organ Transplant Program continues to advance the sciences of immunology and transplantation with its strong research and clinical trials departments, and its innovations in clinical practice. The program is committed to supporting initiatives which demonstrate potential benefits for patients with organ transplants and for those still awaiting transplantation.

Living Donor Transplantation

Recognizing that the organ donation rate limits our opportunities for transplantation, our program is currently expanding our living donor transplant programs. At present, our center performs over 50 living donor kidney transplants per year. Beginning in March, 2000 the program now offers living donor liver transplant services. In the coming months, the program will also offer the option of living donor lung transplant.

Small Bowel Transplantation

In 1999, the Multi Organ Transplant Program was pleased to welcome Dr. David Grant who brings his expertise in the field of GI transplant to the Toronto Region. With the addition of Dr. Grant to our surgical team, the program is now able to offer small bowel transplant as part of its wide range of organ transplantation services.

Nurse Practitioners

In the fall of 1999, the program introduced the role of Primary Care Nurse Practitioner into the Ambulatory Care department, and now has 4 Primary Care Nurse Practitioners within this clinical setting to assist with assessment, health promotion and patient care management for transplant patients after discharge from hospital. The program is currently working to introduce Acute Care Nurse Practitioners to our transplant team.

The Multi Organ Transplant Program is committed to the importance of these nursing roles within the department and is confident that their expertise will enhance the quality of patient care.
