Patient Teaching Videos

The Multi Organ Transplant Program of the Toronto General Hospital has developed 4 patient education videos designed to help meet the foundational health teaching needs of transplant recipients. These videos work well to enhance existing health teaching programs and assist health care providers to meet their patients' learning needs.
  • Infection Following Transplantation
  • Rejection Following Transplantation
  • Health Complications Following Transplantation
  • Lifestyle Adaptations for Transplant Patients

Each video is produced by a team of nurses, transplant coordinators, physicians and other health care professionals who work specifically with organ transplant patients. The videos are suitable for any organ group and include information from both clinical and personal perspectives through interviews with health care providers and transplant recipients.

These programs consolidate the components of patient teaching into a concise, educational format. This provides transplant recipients with comprehensive information to help them care for their new organ and cope with life after transplantation. The videos can be purchased separately or as a set, and are currently in use by transplant programs in North America, Europe and Australia.

1. Infection Following Transplantation [15 min]

This video uses animation to enhance understanding of the role of the immune system. The program teaches patients from all organ transplant groups the importance of knowing how to recognize the signs and symptoms of infection. General signs & symptoms of infection are reviewed as well as those for respiratory, wound, and urinary tract infection. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is also discussed by health care professionals and patients.

2. Rejection Following Transplantation: 18 min

Again, animation is used to demonstrate how the immune system is kept from attacking the transplanted organ and eliciting a rejection response. The video provides an overview of the signs & symptoms of rejection for the following organ transplant groups:

  • kidney
  • kidney/pancreas
  • liver
  • lung
  • and heart.

Patient interviews relate the personal experience of rejection following organ transplant and highlight the information provided by members of the health care team.

3. Health Complications Following Transplantation: 20 min

In this video, patients receive information about the 5 most common complications faced by transplant patients:

  • diabetes
  • cancer
  • hypertension
  • high cholesterol
  • osteoporosis

Each is discussed in detail to provide patients and their families with an understanding of the risks involved. Transplant recipients share their personal stories about these complications, building upon the clinical information provided by various health care professionals.

4. Lifestyle Adaptations for Transplant Patients: 23 min

This program addresses important lifestyle issues for transplant recipients. As with the other videos, actual transplant patients are interviewed about their experiences adapting to life following organ transplantation. Topics covered include:
