Information for Patients Seeking Transplants

The Multi Organ Transplant Program receives over 35 referrals per month from physicians of patients with end-stage organ failure, seeking transplantation. At present, the program provides the following types of organ transplants:

  • heart
  • heart-lung
  • single lung
  • double lung
  • liver
  • living donor liver
  • kidney
  • living donor kidney
  • pancreas kidney
  • small bowel

Patients are referred from the Toronto region, the province of Ontario, and from across Canada. The program's Transplant Patient Assessment Centre was developed in 1998 to consolidate the process of assessing patients'suitability for transplant, and expedite the workup process.

Most patients referred to the program complete their workup process within 60 days, unless there are extenuating circumstances and/or a complex medical history. Workup involves various tests and consultations to assess each individual's circumstances. At the end of the workup process, patients and their referring physician are advised as to whether or not the patient is a suitable candidate for organ transplant.

Patients accepted for organ transplant are placed immediately on the appropriate transplant waiting list. All patients waiting for organ transplant receive extensive resource materials to educate and prepare them for organ transplantation. Patients also participate in our pre-transplant education program to assist them in understanding the process of transplantation, enabling them to meet many members of our health care team.

Over the years, the sciences of immunology and transplantation have evolved, enabling us to expand the criteria for patients wishing to be considered for organ transplantation. Therefore, every patient is assessed on an individual basis.

If you, or someone you know, has end-stage organ disease and would like to be considered for an organ transplant, you must be referred from your family physician or specialist. Once we recieve the referral request from your physician, we will contact you to begin the assessment process.
