Orientation For staff within the MOT, educational support begins with a weeklong orientation program to the field and practice of transplantation. Organized by the program's Clinical Educator, Alicia Healey, this intensive program familiarizes new staff with the key concepts of transplant care and introduces them to the wide range members within the health care team. Resource materials are provided to enhance self study and learning, while a variety of teaching aids and activities are employed to enhance the learning experience of the participants. Each staff nurse will be assigned a designated preceptor for the duration of their clinical orientation period on the MOT inpatient unit. These designated nurses will have completed the hospital preceptorship program and are chosen for their clinical expertise, teaching and mentoring abilities. The Preceptors support and guide new staff to a successful experience within the transplant setting. Professional Development In addition to weekly rounds held for each of the organ groups, Multidisciplinary Rounds are held each week to address topics of interest to nursing and allied health professionals throughout the MOT program. These rounds provide updates on program activities, current issues in transplantation, and important matters in health care. For the past several years, the organizing committee for the MOT program's annual conference, Day in Transplant & Immunology, have added an exclusive program specifically designed for nurses and allied health professionals. This successful event attracts healthcare professionals from various transplant programs throughout Toronto and the surrounding area. Each year, the organizing committee is pleased to feature a keynote address from a noted international expert in the field of transplantation within the varied conference program. Sponsorship and support for this annual event is such that the conference is free to all registering participants. The Call for Abstracts is available in the summer months. Student Opportunities: Nursing The Multi Organ Transplant Program is unique in its comprehensive range of transplant services. Care is provided throughout the continuum of transplantation and therefore provides unique learning opportunities for students in diploma, undergraduate and graduate programs: Nursing — Undergraduate As of 2001, the MOT Program has engaged in a unique partnership with Ryerson University to offer a year long clinical placement in Transplantation to select students. This innovative initiative offers clinical experience throughout the continuum of transplant care. For more information contact Ryerson University. Nursing — Undergraduate Degree Nursing students in their final year of their BScN degree may apply for 1 term clinical placements on the MOT inpatient unit. Senior year baccalaureate nursing students are also eligible for placement in the Ambulatory Care setting. Individualized clinical placements can be offered for baccalaureate students in their final year which enable the student to experience the complete continuum of care for transplant recipients. (This option is only offered as a year long placement for select students.) Nursing — Primary Care Nurse Practitioner With the PCNP role recently integrated into the MOT program, there are opportunities for PCNP students to consider placement in the field of transplantation. Nursing — Graduate Degree Graduate level clinical experiences can be specifically designed to meet the student's objectives and learning needs, encompassing a wide range of clinical settings and patient populations for both Masters and ACNP students. Nursing — International Nurses from many international centres have come to observe and study the approach and practice of transplant nursing within the MOT program. Each placement is planned to meet the needs of the individual student and the program offers a wide range of observational and clinical experiences for visiting colleagues. Nursing — Diploma The MOT in patient unit currently accepts clinical placements from nursing students in their final years of both RPN & RN diploma study. Students in undergraduate, PCNP, and graduate nursing education interested in a placement within the MOT program will be asked to submit a resume and meet with the program's Clinical Educator and/or Clinical Nurse Specialist prior to acceptance. Candidates must present evidence of both high academic and clinical achievement. Students should contact their university program placement officer or the MOT program directly for more information. Student Opportunities: Allied Health The Multi Organ Transplant Program team includes a number of allied health professionals who provide invaluable perspective, support and practice in transplant patient care. There are a number of clinical student opportunities available in various disciplines and settings throughout the program. Students are advised to contact their university program placement officer to explore opportunities appropriate to their program of study. |
